Research investment review for producer organizations

Producer-controlled research organizations, such as commodity commissions, check-off agencies and grower-funded foundations, invest levy money in research whose payoff may arrive a decade later. That long horizon makes portfolio decisions, return-on-research evaluation and board–staff governance unusually hard. It is a specialist area of EstimandLab.

Questions this answers

  • Where should the next research dollar go, given what growers need and what others already fund?
  • What did past research investments return to producers, and how confident can we be?
  • How should the board and management share research decisions?
  • How do we report research value to levy payers credibly?

Methods

Economic surplus and benefit–cost analysis of research, adoption and attribution modelling, portfolio scoring frameworks, governance review grounded in agency theory, and grower surveys.
